Silken arias and fragile butterfly wings float on the waters of Sydney Harbour
A very atmospheric backdrop to a Puccini classic!
The production, although simplistic in nature shone on the grand scale of the stage.
I liked the interpretation of the 'Butterfly', and the music reflected this with the sensitive conducting by our own Brain Castles-Onion. Personally I liked the idea of the butterfly tattoo on her back, however I wasn't so keen on the choice of clothing during her death scene, and it could have been milked a little more drama-wise (though it didn't stop me from spouting a few tears at the end - how could you not!?)
Pinkerton was played by Andeka Gorrotxategi and Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly) by Hyeseoung Kwon. Un Bel Di being the most well known and loved piece, along with the calm beauty of the Humming Chorus.
The wet weather did not ruin the overall performance, however it did left it's audience shivering and covered in plastic to shield from the rain.
Loved it ~ a great night to be had by all ages!
I very much look forward to playing my own Cio-Cio-San in the future!
